The Fifteen Minute Novel: Day 205

The Fifteen Minute Novel is a novel written fifteen minutes at a time with each week day’s section starting with the sentence from the previous day. At least it is attempting to be a novel. For now I am just aiming at one continuous story, worked on for fifteen minutes each day. Started Friday January 1st, 2021 (in case you want to search for the beginning. I can’t wait to see where it ends up. It could be good, or it could be a mess. We’ll have to see. For now, here is today’s fifteen minutes.

Day 205: In the lobby people had begun to stretch.

In the lobby people had begun to stretch. There were four people he didn’t know and Gary.  Three of the four were women and the other a man. With himself and Gary added the genders were even.  James wondered if that was by accident or design.

Two of the women were dressed more or less as he was in generic looking shorts and t-shirts.  Gary was dressed in garments plastered with the club’s logo that James guessed came from the club shop.  He remembered passing it on their tour but not paying it much attention.  He supposed these items were either sold there or issued to employees.

The other two in the group wore what looked more like high tech running gear.  They also looked like a couple and seemed disinterested in mixing with the others.  James found them both a little intimidating and with a nod to the others took a place beside the two women who seemed to be following the same dress code as he was.

“We just have Terry left,” Gary told them.  “He is still changing. We’ll officially start the stretches when he arrives, but of you’d like to get warmed up go ahead.”

James assumed this last part was meant for him as the others were already in the process of stretching.  James nodded and thinking he could use all the help he could get, he looked at the others and tried to copy their movements as they readied their bodies to run.

Terry proved to be another male and James felt himself relax a little upon seeing him.  Not only was Terry dressed more or less identically to him, but he was of a similar age and sporting a very familiar body by office work physique. As all of the others looked a little younger and a lot more fit than he was, James planned on being at the tail end of the running line and anticipated struggling to keep up. Looking at Terry he thought he might be able to keep up with him.

‘So At least I’ll have company at the back of the group,’ James thought.

Terry seemed to be thinking along the same lines and tossed James a grin that seemed equal parts welcome and relief.

Now that they were all gathered, Gary led them through a series of warm up exercises designed to keep them limber and not cause themselves injury.  James knew this because Gary kept up a running commentary as they stretched.  Often he sprinkled mention of injuries sustained by others as he helped them stretch.  James wasn’t entirely certain what some of the words referred to as his high school biology class was long ago and didn’t focus on sports related injuries but he figured anything with the word torn in it wasn’t something he needed to do to his body.

While James thought he would be the least adapted to the exercises, he found this wasn’t the case.  Terry seemed to be on his level, which was a relief.  The two casually dressed women seemed to already know all of the stretches and looked comfortable with the pre run work out.  The couple in the high tech gear seemed to be just as much in the novice category as he was.  It was somewhat refreshing to see.
